I'm the author of four books of poetry, with a fifth forthcoming in 2019, a critical book on Theodore Roethke, and a translation of selected poems from the contemporary Spanish poet Julio Martintez Mesanza. I've also collaborated with composers. My books and musical work are listed on the right. On this home page and the pages for each book, you'll find links to sites where my work is available.

I've given readings, talks, and workshops in the U.S. and abroad. Prizes for my work include a Discovery Award; Fulbright positions in Spain and at the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry of Queen's University, Belfast; and fellowships from the Camargo Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. I'm an emeritus professor at the University of Cincinnati and serve as editor-at-large for The Cincinnati Review.

I'm available for readings, workshops, and talks. Please use the tabs for further information and to contact me.

Below are upcoming events and links to a poem from my forthcoming book Immediate Song with an audio file, a reading I gave at Florida State in 2013, an interview, and link to some recent translations of the Uruguayan poet Javier Etchevarren.

My new book of poetry Immediate Song will be out from Milkweed Editions in spring of 2019.

My poem "Jar Song" is forthcoming in the spring, 2018 issue of The Yale Review.

Two lyric essays, "Inheritance" and "Waldeck, 1970," will appear in the spring, 2018 issue of Copper Nickel.

I'll be joining Geoffrey Brock, Martha Collins, and Mira Rosenthal on the panel Free and Constrained: Writing, Translating, and the Creative Process at 10:30 on Saturday, March 10th in Room 15 of the Tampa Convention Center at this year's AWP conference.
